I happened across your article on Matala. I had been wondering if any of the people who had experienced its magic ever got together or shared their individual stories somehow. I am glad your interest was tweeked so that you put time and energy into searching for the story.

I arrived in Matala in the spring of 1969 and stayed there until the Greek military came and closed the caves. I cannot remember exactly when that was, but it must have been in the early 1970’s.

I was there while Joni Mitchell, and her lover Cary, lived there as well. We became acquaintances and shared trips to Iraklion, where we slept in bunk style beds in the local Youth Hostel.

Would you please let me know if there is a forum where we can share our experiences in Matala. Perhaps you can advise me on a next step if you are unaware of one.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I was in Matala 1969-1970. A couple of the people I remember who were also there include Alan Treharne (from South Africa), Dyani Wetcher (then Linda?), Geoffrey Duin (we fell in love and hitched to Munich, then the US), and of course, Joni Mitchell.

I am not sure if you are still interested in stories of Matala, but I would be happy to recount time spent there, including trips to Iraklion with Joni Mitchell. It was during the time that Joni fell in love with Carey, the leather shoemaker whom she made famous in her album.

I look forward to hearing from you.
